SHAKESPEAREANCE: Ages 9 - 12

Open the door to the rich and enchanting world of William Shakespeare!

Learn how to “suit the action to the word, the word to the action”, and discover the best way to tell a story through gesture, movement, and physical collaboration.

Students will work together to discover the hidden meanings behind some of Shakespeare’s most famous lines and step into the shoes of his beloved characters -- cunning villains, witty fools, melancholy kings, and brave heroines!

CLASSES AND WORKSHOPS: Ages 13 - 19

Explore Shakespearean Youth Theatre’s acting classes, camps, and workshops for teens. Acting classes for teens and theatre classes for teens run year round at Shakespearean Youth Theatre.

PERFORMANCES AND AUDITIONS

Join the SYT Summer Ensemble as we tackle Shakespeare’s sparkling comedies The Comedy of Errors and Love’s Labour’s Lost opening July 2023! This pre-professional program is currently auditioning actors ages 15- 19 to join the 2023 Summer Ensemble. Auditions are February 17th - 19th in Saint Paul and sign ups are open now.

As we prepare plays for public performance, students will study and strengthen core classical acting techniques, including:

  • voice and breath work to strengthen the physical connections between the actor and the text

  • movement work, including Viewpoints and stage combat with trained instructors

  • Original Practices text work using the text from Shakespeare’s First Folio

  • in-depth analysis of Shakespeare’s verse; poetic techniques including anthesis, assonance, metaphor, and iambic pentameter will be studied and applied in performance

  • focus on the actor’s creative voice in the rehearsal room; development of each student’s personal interpretation of the text and its relevance in 2023

SYT’s unique creative process focuses on empowering and emboldening the creative and interpretive voice of each young actor; each students’ approach to the story and its themes take centerstage as we work together to create a new interpretation of Shakespeare’s classic tale that speaks to our current cultural moment.
